About PluMTri

ABOUT PluMTRI.ORG

In 2013, the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) started working on the conceptualisation of an on-line National Portal for Research and Innovation which in time led to the creation of the web-based portal PluMTri (Platform for Maltese Research and Innovation). Two years later, PluMTri was launched with the following goals:

  • To showcase Maltese talent and competencies in Research and Innovation in a number of fields extending beyond science and technology;
  • To facilitate knowledge sharing and networking between research facilities, universities, public authorities, as well as private stakeholders;
  • To serve as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for information on career and funding opportunities, events and news pertaining to Research and Innovation;
  • To provide information on Structural Funds and smart specialisation and enable researchers to contribute to projects related to Malta's smart specialisation areas.

PluMTri performs 2 major functions, the first being the showcasing of information, opportunities, programmes, and any news and events related to R&I. The portal’s second function is to allow users to view and connect with other individuals and organisations active in R&I. Users have the opportunity to register as members of PluMTri and upload their profiles based on a standardised template.

Maltese individuals and organisations based in Malta as well as abroad can thus identify potential collaborators on studies or projects and simultaneously be identified as potential collaborators by the viewers of the portal.

MCST will process and validate membership applications prior to allowing any profiles and publications to be uploaded on the online platform for viewing. Member profiles will be viewable by third party users. All the while members retain the right to decide which information is viewable by other members of the portal versus non-member, third-party viewers.

THE PLUMTRI FORUM on SMART SPECIALISATION

Another feature of the PluMTri portal is its Forum on Smart Specialisation.

Smart Specialisation is a strategic approach predicated upon the need for regions to concentrate resources on key areas of economic potential. It is an ex-ante condition imposed by the European Commission for all projects applying for ERDF funding.

Malta's national R&I Strategy (2014-2020) identified the following smart specialisation areas for Malta: Aquaculture, Value-Added Manufacturing, Health with a focus on e-health and active ageing, Aviation, Tourism Product Development, Maritime Services and Resource-Efficient Buildings. ICT is seen as an overarching area of specialisation.

Each of these areas has been selected for targeted investment. They represent areas of strategic economic and innovation potential where Malta has strong unique advantages which can and will be exploited. The aim is to tap into the entrepreneurial process of discovery as a means for driving local innovation and competitive advantage. A range of entities stand to benefit from these investments including collaborative partnerships, innovative public procurement, training and networking opportunities.

An Action Plan on the implementation and monitoring of the smart specialisation process in Malta is currently being finalised by MCST.

There are opportunities for entrepreneurs and industry, from small firms to large companies, to take the lead in driving these initiatives and spur the entrepreneurial discovery process. Academia, public entities, NGOs and civil society have an equally important role to play in the smart specialisation process.

Work in each of the areas is maturing and a number of projects are in the planning phase. Find out about the projects in your area of interest and engage in the process of shaping their agenda. Alternatively, propose ideas for new projects or inform us about relevant ongoing initiatives.

Sign up to the PluMTri Forum and receive news alerts on developments in the area(s) of smart specialisation of direct interest to you! To do so, please request access to the Forum by writing to jacqueline.b.barbara@gov.mt. You will need to be registered on PluMTri and specify which smart specialisation area/s you are interested in.

You can also request a one-to-one briefing to catch up on the process so far and obtain information on a particular area by contacting jacqueline.b.barbara@gov.mt
