This month AquaBioTech Group hosted a workshop in collaboration with two of their funded research projects – FishEUTrust and PROFIUS. The workshop targeted industry and governance and aimed to get a better understanding of the Maltese seafood industry's needs and challenges, as well as to showcase innovative solutions for seafood traceability and valorising unused fish biomass after harvest. Pushing out plastic in consumer-goods packaging

Attention supermarket shoppers in Belgium, France and Luxembourg: a test to cut waste from plastic packaging of foods is coming to nearby stores.

Retailers Carrefour and U-Group plan to sell yoghurts, cheeses, fruit juices, biscuits and other items in packaging made of cellulose fibres, which come from wood or other plant-based materials. 

Market moves

In total, 30 to 60 stores in the three countries will start featuring the environmentally friendly wrappings on 13 types of food by the end of this year.

Carrefour and U have teamed up with food producers, packagers and researchers in a project that received EU funding to help get green packaging materials into stores.

The Maltese consultancy company AquaBioTech Group is a major partner in a project that focuses on the development of an innovative farming system for the intense, yet sustainable, production of shrimps. The project’s name is BIORAS_SHRIMP, it is co-funded by BlueBio – ERANET and it is a joined effort between 10 partners from Italy, Malta, Norway and India. The Malta Council for Science and Technology has launched five support schemes to encourage local companies, academics and researchers tap millions in EU funding for research and development. 

The schemes all seek to increase Malta's participation in Horizon Europe, the largest research and innovation programme in Europe.

Addressing  a news conference, Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti said the schemes are:

  • ERC Support Scheme – offering researchers the opportunity, and helping them, to access funds from the European Research Council;
  • Horizon Europe Networking Support Scheme – interested parties will be given funds to attend Horizon Europe networking events;

The SINO-MALTA fund originated from an initial agreement between the Government of Malta and the Government of the People's Republic of China in the realm of Science and Technological Cooperation which later, through the work of the Joint Committee for the cooperation, developed into the Fund that is managed by the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in China.
