Malta Council for Science and Technology Deputy Director of Internationalisation Dr. Maria Azzopardi and Senior Executive of Internationalisation George Bugeja were special guests on Tuesday at AquaBioTech Group’s research and innovation facility to celebrate the closing of the collaborative Sino-Malta research project HatcheryMatch.

The development of marine aquaculture requires a reliable supply of fish eggs and larvae in desirable quality and quantity from inland hatcheries, instead of depending on wild-caught fish, as 85% of marine stocks are under pressure and either fully exploited or overfished. Driven by this high pressure and demand, four partners from Malta and China worked together to solve the common problems in marine fish hatcheries, including low controllability, high labour dependence and compromised water quality. The recognition by Malta Council for Science and Technology to support this…

The PROFIUS project and its Malta-based partner AquaBioTech Group (ABT) are making significant advancements towards valorising previously discarded tuna side-stream material and addressing logistic and technical challenges to transform these materials into valuable products.

The farming of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a significant contributor to the local economy in Malta. The Maltese tuna farming industry generated approximately 190 million euros in 2021, sustains nearly 1,000 local full time employment opportunities, and provides a high-end fresh or frozen product for markets in Japan and other regions across Asia. Although tuna aquaculture is a net positive for the community, there is room for the industry to embrace sustainability and circular economy approaches more fully, ultimately benefitting farmers and the…

Increasing sustainability for local Mediterranean fisheries: EuFish_SustainableGrowth project.

For most fish species, only the fillets are currently utilised whereas the rest of raw materials are usually discarded during processing (e.g., skin, backbone). Other species are considered low value by fishermen and consumers, for example bogue (Boops boops), horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and round sardinella (Sardinella aurita) that may be returned to the sea as discards together with inedible, undersized, or damaged organisms. Other fish species like silver scabbardfish (Lepidopus caudatus) and dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) are abundant and little known but may offer an alternative to the species most commonly consumed. Several of those species belong to the “blue fish” group and have excellent nutritional values, health properties, flavour and quality-price ratio.

Last October, the neuroimaging community was abuzz with excitement. Researchers in South Korea seemed to have overcome one of the biggest limitations of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), a popular method for studying the human brain.

Jang-Yeon Park, an author of the study, had been pondering the limitations of fMRI since his graduate student days at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. While conducting his PhD in medical physics, Park had developed a fascination for neuroscience. He found himself in seminars where researchers described studies of the human brain they had conducted with fMRI.

The technique works by picking up on changes in blood oxygen levels, which fluctuate with neuronal activity. But these blood-flow-related — or haemodynamic — changes are relatively slow compared with the neurons that they represent. To Park, this was a clear limitation. To…

Communication is an indispensable part of our lives. It helps us share experiences, connect with people, and express our thoughts. EyeCon, a collaborative project between the University of Malta and 88.eu, financed by the Malta Council for Science and Technology under the FUSION programme, has created an application with a suite of gaze-controlled communication applications intended to provide individuals with mobility impairments an alternative mode of communication through their eye movement alone. The EyeCon desktop app can track the user’s eye gaze by intelligently processing electrooculographic (EOG) data and head position and orientation data in order to estimate the user’s point of regard on a computer screen in real-time, while also allowing the user to move their head freely while using the system.

In order to use the EyeCon app users are required to follow a short…
