A Maltese student has won an award for a theoretical space mission that aims to identify the possibility of life on planets outside Earth’s solar system.
Taking part in an annual summer school organised by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency in Austria, University of Malta research support officer Maria Aquilina formulated a plan to discover which planets can host life.
“It’s like detective work. You are searching for a needle in a cosmic haystack,” Aquilina said as she and a team had to create a unique mission proposal in under two weeks.
In July, Aquilina attended an 11-day summer school that saw 60…

Coastal regions and islands across the globe often face challenges in securing freshwater resources. In many coastal regions worldwide, there is a new and promising source of water called offshore freshened groundwater (OFG). This is fresh water stored in reservoirs that are below the ocean floor. A new study at the University of Malta has shed light on the existence of a potentially significant OFG system in the East China Sea, near the Shengsi Islands. The research, conducted by Prof. Aaron Micallef and Dr. Ariel T. Thomas from the Department of Geosciences, is the first numerical study of its kind in the East China Sea. The findings have been published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Frontiers in Earth Science. This endeavour has been funded through the bilateral SINO-Malta Fund 2020 (…

University of Malta developing a novel Floating Breakwater Design to support Offshore Renewables in the Maltese Waters.
Malta has often been called a 'Fortress Island' given the significant presence of fortifications that have been constructed by the Knights of St. John and during the British period. Such developments had been driven by the need to protect Malta, located in such a strategically important location in the Mediterranean, from possible invasion.
The urgent need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for our energy needs by investing in offshore renewables will demand our densely populated island to invest in other types of protection in decades to come. This time, the defenses will have to be located at sea to protect renewable energy devices, such as floating photovoltaic panels, from waves in stormy conditions.
The Clean Energy Transition Partnership shall be announcing the 2023 Call through an event to be held online on 13th September 2023 from 10:00 to 13:00. During this event prospective applicants can attain an in-depth understanding of the upcoming call module and navigate the proposal submission process with clarity. More information on this event can be obtained here.
