Surface disinfectants have become the unsung heroes of our modern world, especially in the wake of recent global health crises. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, their significance skyrocketed as they emerged as the frontline defence against infectious diseases. However, behind their widespread use lies a complex supply chain from production to distribution. Nothing can disprove what is told by accurate data. This is exactly what we strive to do in the STREAM project, at MCAST. Based on routine observations, we watch and monitor the sea around us to provide information to users in the form of operational assessments of essential marine parameters for the Maltese Islands. One such service is the daily mapping, forecasting and alerting of anomalous sea surface temperature (SST) events as they happen in time and space, with charts and maps showing areas of highest intensity and impact. Running since November 2023, the service is already providing undisputed insights on evident climate change pressures on the marine ecosystem.

In the framework of the Earth Observation Applications activities, the EO for Sustainable Blue Economy project aims to develop innovative high-quality EO-based information products, indicators and methods, targeting specific high-priority matters raised by the international environment policy agenda and with a distinct connection to the European Union (EU) Green Deal.
The project aims at enabling sustainable Blue Economy by developing new products, indicators and tools to support local Blue Economic activities and monitor their impact on the marine environment. This month AquaBioTech Group hosted a workshop in collaboration with two of their funded research projects – FishEUTrust and PROFIUS. The workshop targeted industry and governance and aimed to get a better understanding of the Maltese seafood industry's needs and challenges, as well as to showcase innovative solutions for seafood traceability and valorising unused fish biomass after harvest. Amongst the attendees were representatives from the Malta Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Malta Food Agency, Malta Council for Science and Technology and MFF Ltd., alongside AquaBioTech Group staff who work on the two projects and experts in the field of aquaculture and fisheries.

Pushing out plastic in consumer-goods packaging
Attention supermarket shoppers in Belgium, France and Luxembourg: a test to cut waste from plastic packaging of foods is coming to nearby stores.
Retailers Carrefour and U-Group plan to sell yoghurts, cheeses, fruit juices, biscuits and other items in packaging made of cellulose fibres, which come from wood or other plant-based materials.

In total, 30 to 60 stores in the three countries will start featuring the environmentally friendly wrappings on 13 types of food by the end of this year.

Stakeholder engagement is at the core of the institutional mechanism set up towards the implementation of the 2021 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Blue Economy (SBE) and its related Roadmap.

The Maltese consultancy company AquaBioTech Group is a major partner in a project that focuses on the development of an innovative farming system for the intense, yet sustainable, production of shrimps. The project’s name is BIORAS_SHRIMP, it is co-funded by BlueBio – ERANET and it is a joined effort between 10 partners from Italy, Malta, Norway and India. The schemes all seek to increase Malta's participation in Horizon Europe, the largest research and innovation programme in Europe.
