The Maltese Islands are home to some of the world’s oldest prehistoric temples. Unfortunately, continuous exposure to the elements causes these Temples to suffer from ongoing stone degradation. The MEGALITH project builds on recent efforts to understand, and hopefully help mitigate, these environmental impacts by generating simulations that allow the team to combine meteorological effects and resulting stone degradation on these sites. Mnajdra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was chosen as a case study for this project.
The project received funding in November 2023, building on conservation-focused studies that have been conducted over many years by the same group, and others, in collaboration with Heritage Malta and Italian colleagues. ‘Currently, the Temples are covered with a shelter that protects from rain, provides shading, and reduces temperature fluctuations between day and night. However, the researchers…

A new project aimed at promoting research in maritime technology has been launched. The project was announced during a press conference addressed by the Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research, and Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, and Dr. Ing. Brian Azzopardi from the Foundation for Innovation and Research – Malta (FiR.mt).
This initiative by FiR.mt enables a new research thematic in Marine Technology Research that focuses on three distinct research studies: wave energy, light transfer systems for in-water and on-water vehicles, and a real-time monitoring living laboratory for ports. The project aims to offer solutions to reduce dependency on fossil fuels, leading to improved air quality and a cleaner environment.
Parliamentary Secretary Keith Azzopardi Tanti stated, “This project is significant as the sea is not only a part of our heritage but also essential…

The EU’s trans-European transport network policy, the TEN-T policy, is a key instrument for planning and developing a coherent, efficient, multimodal, and high-quality transport infrastructure across the EU. The network comprises railways, inland waterways, short sea shipping routes and roads linking urban nodes, maritime and inland ports, airports and terminals.
It fosters efficient transportation for people and goods, ensures access to jobs and services, and enables trade and economic growth. It strengthens the EU’s economic, social and territorial cohesion and creates seamless transport systems across borders, without gaps, bottlenecks or missing links. In particular since its revision in 2024, it also aims to reduce the environmental and climate impact of transport and to increase the safety and the resilience of the network.
The research team of Project BIMA recently visited the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regassification plant at Delimara. The regassification plant at Delimara is operated by Reganosa and is tasked with vaporising the LNG from the cryogenic temperature of around 160 Degrees Celsius below freezing point to ambient temperature. The Natural Gas in Liquid state (LNG) is only moderately pressurised in the Floating Storage Unit (FSU) anchored at Delimara but is then pressurized and pumped at 30 bar in the gaseous/vapour state to be used at the D3 and D4 power stations.
LNG is the main fuel source at the Delimara Power Station and is also the fuel being considered for marine dual fuel engines in Project BIMA.…
