Xjenza Malta and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) launched the Xjenza Malta-TÜBİTAK 2026 Joint Call for R&I Proposals to support cooperation in Science, Technology, and Innovation. 

This Joint Call aims to assist researchers and innovators from both countries in strengthening their scientific expertise and networks, fostering collaboration for future funding opportunities, including the annual PRIMA Section 1 and Section 2 Calls. This Call will focus on two distinct pillars:

Pillar 1: PRIMA Thematic Areas: 

  1. Management of Water 🌊

  2. Farming Systems 🌱

  3. Agro-Food Value Chain 🥦

This scheme offers up to €8,000/project to support collaboration with partners across PRIMA Participating States.

Funding supports:
• Short training or research placements abroad
• Strategic networking visits
• Knowledge-transfer seminars or workshops in Malta on PRIMA R&I themes

Xjenza Malta is pleased to announce the launch of the PRIMA Section 2 Call 2026—an exciting funding opportunity for Malta-based researchers and innovators to participate in transnational research projects focusing on Water Management, Farming Systems, and Agro-Food Chain.

With a national budget allocation of up to €500,000, this call enables Malta-based entities to collaborate with international partners in tackling key challenges related to the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus.

JPI Oceans Offshore Freshened Groundwater – Joint Transnational Call 2025

A new Joint Call under the JPI Oceans OFG initiative, co-led by Xjenza Malta and Italy’s MUR has been launched. This Call aims to serve as a “proof of concept” through a pioneering scientific exploration and validation campaign. It seeks to pave new pathways for a water-secure future by bridging cutting-edge science with responsible policymaking and community well-being.

Call’s focus topics:
- Comprehensive characterization and validation of OFG bodies 
- Environmental, technological, and economic feasibility of OFG utilisation 
- Legal and governance frameworks for sustainable management

Xjenza Malta is supporting successful Malta-based entities, both public and private, with up to €300,000 per project. Deadline to submit proposal and National application: 6 March 2026.

A Call for Practical Demonstrations of the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus in the Mediterranean

he principal aim of WEFE4MED is to promote a W(ater)E(nergy)F(ood)E(cosystems) Nexus-oriented approach to sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. Over the course of the last three years, the consortium behind this project have also sought to build a thriving Nexus Community of Practice (NCoP). 

A central component of this Community is a collection of demonstration sites located across the Mediterranean basin which showcase the utility and socio-economic viability of the WEFE Nexus.

The Energy and Water Agency is pleased to launch the 2025 edition of the Energy and Water Research and Innovation Scheme.

Now in its sixth consecutive year, the submission period will open soon for Research and Innovation projects working on solutions that align with Malta’s national priorities in energy and water. The application period is open from the 14th of July and will remain open until the 10th of October.

For this edition, proposals must address at least one of the following priority areas:

  1. Optimising greywater systems for improved efficiency in water use

Funding Opportunity for Malta-based Researchers in Water Management, Farming Systems & Agro-Food Value Chain – Apply Now!

Malta-based entities are eligible to apply for up to € 500,000 in funding, allowing them to join a consortium and submit a proposal for this Call (N.B. if multiple national partners are included in a single consortium, the total funding for all Maltese participants combined cannot exceed the €500,000 cap).

PRIMA Networking Support Scheme (NET2PRIMA)

Xjenza Malta is receiving proposals under the PRIMA Networking Support Scheme (NET2PRIMA). This initiative is designed to strengthen networking opportunities and foster collaboration in the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA), and thus to support R&I in the areas of water management, farming systems and agro-food value chain.

PRIMA is a joint EU program uniting 20 Euro-Mediterranean countries, including:

  • 12 EU Member States: Croatia, Cyprus, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia, and Spain.

Are you seeking funding to enhance your training and mobility activities? The PRIMA Training and Mobility Award 2025 is open for applications, offering an excellent opportunity to establish collaborative links with foreign counterparts from any of the 20 PRIMA Participating States.

Funding Opportunities:

  • In-person short training and/or placements for local researchers in foreign entities,
  • Strategic and targeted visits by local applicants to foreign entities,
  • Knowledge-transfer and/or dissemination seminars or workshops in Malta, on specific PRIMA R&I thematic areas (water management, sustainable farming systems, and agro-food value chain).
