The pre-announcement of the first THCS Joint Transnational Call 2023 entitled “Healthcare of the future” is now out, and the call will official open soon. The human heart beats 100 000 times a day, every beat circulating blood, oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body. Heart failure happens when the fist-sized organ is unable to perform this vital function properly.
Most people with the condition are forced to seek long-term mechanical support for blood circulation. While pumps and artificial hearts have been available for more than 40 years, the options currently on offer are tricky for their users.
New normal
The devices are often noisy and require patients to carry heavy battery packs and have wires going through their skin to power the device. Some even use pumps outside the body to circulate the blood.
But researchers are hopeful that a new generation of artificial hearts will improve things.

The Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) is proud to launch the Euro-Mediterranean Innovation Camp (EMIC), a unique innovation competition and boot camp for youth in the region. EMIC is a new venture for 2023, which aims to nurture innovation and creativity among 18–35-year-olds.
Residents of the Euro-Mediterranean and within this age-group with a novel idea or invention that has the potential to be commercialised and could be converted to a prototype within 3 months can apply. The innovation must address one of the following three thematic areas: health, renewable energy, and environment (including climate change).

The Department of Environmental Design (Faculty for the Built Environment) has won funds to complete an innovative engineering project in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and Science Education (Faculty of Education).

The European Defence Agency (EDA) issued on 1 February 2023 its call for applications to its first ever EDA Research, Technology, and Innovation Papers Awards. This contest will reward a total of three original and valuable defence-related papers covering technologies, processes and applications for enhanced future defence.

In Malta, around 10% of the local population is affected by diabetes. This is especially alarming considering that diabetes can affect the blood and nervous system and eventually even lead to foot amputations. Researchers from the University of Malta (UM) and Mater Dei Hospital are trying to address this problem in their project Sit_Diab: Smart Insole Technology for the Diabetic Foot. On 25 January CINEA launched a new service contract for the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Assistance Mechanism and Blue Forum,which has been awarded EUR 2.2 million for a period of two years. It identifies key circular technologies and innovation needs for the textile, construction and energy-intensive industries.
