The human heart beats 100 000 times a day, every beat circulating blood, oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body. Heart failure happens when the fist-sized organ is unable to perform this vital function properly.
Most people with the condition are forced to seek long-term mechanical support for blood circulation. While pumps and artificial hearts have been available for more than 40 years, the options currently on offer are tricky for their users.
New normal
The devices are often noisy and require patients to carry heavy battery packs and have wires going through their skin to power the device. Some even use pumps outside the body to circulate the blood.
But researchers are hopeful that a new generation of artificial hearts will improve things.

Whether the applicant is a high school graduate, in higher education, post-graduate, or employed, EMIC wants to hear from you – all that is needed are inventive minds with dynamic ideas! (and don´t forget a good command of English).
The project, called Aerodynamic, Pedestrian Level, Air quality Control using Urban Vegetation Elements (APACHE for short), will use computer modelling to spearhead research into new air pollution barriers.
Many of us already appreciate seeing greenery in our urban environments, but what if nature could also provide a solution for the growing issue of air pollution we’re facing in our cities?

In Malta, around 10% of the local population is affected by diabetes. This is especially alarming considering that diabetes can affect the blood and nervous system and eventually even lead to foot amputations. Researchers from the University of Malta (UM) and Mater Dei Hospital are trying to address this problem in their project Sit_Diab: Smart Insole Technology for the Diabetic Foot. They developed a novel method of detecting foot complications early enough to take action in time to help save limbs.
To prevent the amputation numbers from increasing, a research team from the University of Malta and the Mater Dei hospital, led by Professor Alfred Gatt,…

AquaBioTech Group Malta is pleased to announce the launch of the ProNiCare MarTERA ERA-NET Co-fund project, in which they are a partner. In the first six months the project managers and tasks leaders have collaborated extensively on their vision and methodology to achieve the goals of the ambitious work plan, and the research work is now ongoing.
The main objective of this project is to develop a copper-free, eco-friendly, cost-effective surface coating that provides a combination of corrosion and biofouling protection for metal surfaces in niches areas. Marine biofouling and corrosion are two substantial challenges for shipping, offshore infrastructures and maritime technologies exposed to sea water, costing millions of Euros in cleaning costs and fuel inefficiencies in the Mediterranean alone. Compared to ship hull fouling, the fouling community in niche areas may differ compared to exposed areas of ships due to…

Europe's got talent. But talent needs to be nurtured, especially as the EU is going through important demographic transition. This is even more needed in regions that suffer from a shrinking labour force and a low share of persons with a tertiary education, and in regions hit by the departure of young people.
If left unaddressed, this transition will trigger new and growing territorial disparities as regions age and fall behind in number and skills of their workforce. It can change Europe's demographic landscapes hampering the resilience and competitiveness of the EU.
Ensuring that regions facing a talent development trap become more resilient and attractive is crucial in the EU's commitment of leaving nobody and no place behind.
This is why the Commission is launching the ‘Talent Booster Mechanism'. This Mechanism will…
