Xjenza Malta is pleased to announce the launch of the PRIMA Section 2 Call 2026—an exciting funding opportunity for Malta-based researchers and innovators to participate in transnational research projects focusing on Water Management, Farming Systems, and Agro-Food Chain.
With a national budget allocation of up to €500,000, this call enables Malta-based entities to collaborate with international partners in tackling key challenges related to the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus.
Unlocking New Opportunities
The PRIMA Section 2 Call 2026 offers eligible applicants the chance to:
Participate in transnational projects by leveraging funding and support to develop pioneering solutions in sustainable water, farming, and agro-food systems.
Address critical challenges within the following topics:
Thematic Area 1: Water management in the Nexus
Topic 2.1.1- Leveraging Ecosystem Functions and Enhancing Water Allocation for the Protection and Restoration of Non-Perennial Watercourses in the Mediterranean
Thematic Area 2: Farming systems in the Nexus
Topic 2.2.1- Novel remote and non-invasive ICT monitoring and control systems against disease and pest infestation
Thematic Area 3: Food value chain in the Nexus
Topic 2.3.1- Empowering Mediterranean Food Value Chains through Context-Aware Digital Traceability
Key Dates & Application Process
Applicants must:
Carefully review the Call text 2026 and Guidance for applicants;
Comply with the National Rules for Participation (State Aid/Non-State Aid);
Be a Malta-based entity (private/public entities, RKDOs, etc.) with an operating base in Malta;
Complete and submit a National Application Form, duly signed and supported by the required Annexes.

Project coordinator needs to submit the pre-proposal via the PRIMA Electronic Submission System (ESS) by the 15 May 2026, 13:00 CET

Support Scheme - PRIMA Training and Mobility Award 2026 (PTMA)
This scheme offers up to €8,000/project to support collaboration with partners across PRIMA Participating States.
Funding supports:
• Short training or research placements abroad
• Strategic networking visits
• Knowledge-transfer seminars or workshops in Malta on PRIMA R&I themes
Submission deadlines:

In November 2024, the THCS Partnership, co-funded by the European Commission (EC), launched its third Joint Transnational Call (JTC) to support Research and Innovation (R&I) proposals titled “Better care closer to home: Enhancing primary and community care”. This Call brought together 34 Funding Agencies from 22 countries, committing an initial budget of approximately €36 million.
From 149 eligible pre-proposals were submitted requesting €183 million. Following evaluation and a Peer Review Panel (PRP) meeting, 63 were invited to full proposal stage, where the widening initiative allowed invited consortia (under 9 partners) to add one partner from underrepresented Funding Agencies. Finally, 60 full proposals were submitted, from which, after evaluation and PRP meeting, 29 outstanding projects were selected for funding, with a 19.5% success rate and €31.8 million allocated funds (generating €6.9 million EC top-up).
The JTC 2025 two-stage process, embedding the widening initiative, supported undersubscribed Funding Agencies, refined proposals, built stronger consortia, broadened widening country
participation, and strengthened pan-European collaboration in primary and community care R&I - aligning with European Research Area goals. Notably, all participating Funding Agencies had at least one project selected for award.
The call attracted wide participation, especially from Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Canada, Norway, and Sweden; top-performing teams were from Italy, Spain, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Portugal, and Switzerland.
Awarded projects mirrored submission domains: interdisciplinary “Other” topics (25%) dominated, followed by mental health/social issues (18%), with stronger success in musculoskeletal, neurology and related diseases (11%) and neurodegenerative diseases (7%).
Project partners were largely academic, with meaningful input from healthcare/social welfare providers, SMEs, and a smaller % on non-profits (e.g., NGOs) and patient organizations.
The results of JTC 2025 reflect strong engagement from the scientific community and highlight the flexibility and impact of transnational collaboration in health R&I. The selected projects are expected to deliver significant contributions to the future of health and care systems across Europe. For a full list of funded projects and their concept notes, click here. In the context of the European energy transition, hydrogen represents one of the most relevant pillars for the decarbonization of hard‑to‑abate industrial sectors, heavy mobility and large integrated energy systems.
Within the Ocean‑H2 project, an in‑depth analysis of national and European policies will be carried out, with the aim of clarifying objectives, technical constraints, operational solutions and implementation timelines, in order to obtain useful insights for energy planning, research, port logistics, industrial production and the development of H₂‑ready infrastructures.
To support the dissemination and understanding of the Italian National Hydrogen Strategy, the main contents have been transformed into a set of concise infographics designed to facilitate consultation and support decision‑making processes and project activities.
Relevance for Ocean‑H2
👉 Hydrogen is a key vector for the decarbonization of maritime and port systems.
👉 Import, storage and distribution infrastructures will be crucial for Italy’s positioning in the Mediterranean.
👉 Industrial and transport demand will require integrated, interoperable and scalable solutions.

What is the THCS Knowledge Hub?
The THCS Knowledge Hub is an online collaborative platform that brings together knowledge, tools, and experiences from across Europe and beyond to support the transformation of health and social care systems. Developed within the European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems, the Hub serves as a central space with the goal to turn knowledge into action to support sustainable, more effective and person-centred health and care systems.
Why the Knowledge Hub Matters?
Health and social care systems across Europe face common challenges such as ageing populations, increasing demand for integration of services, workforce shortages, sustainability pressures, rapid digital transformation and other. Addressing these challenges requires requires not only new ideas but also mechanisms for shared learning what works in different contexts and collaboration across countries and disciplines. The National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) is organising the 2026 edition of AMARE-MED – the Advanced School on Multispecies Modelling Approaches for Ecosystem-Based Marine Resource Management in the Mediterranean Sea, which will take place on 22–26 June 2026 at Xjenza Malta. Xjenza Malta is collaborating with OGS in hosting this year’s edition in Malta.
AMARE-MED is an international summer school held annually across Mediterranean countries, focusing on the sustainable management of marine resources. The programme brings together researchers and experts to share knowledge on innovative tools used in fisheries science and marine ecosystem modelling.
During the week-long course, participants will learn about advanced modelling approaches for fisheries management and marine ecosystem analysis, delivered by internationally recognised researchers. The programme combines theoretical lectures with practical sessions aimed at strengthening scientific capacity in the use of ecosystem-based modelling approaches.
Xjenza Malta encourages Malta-based researchers and students interested in marine science, ecosystem modelling, and sustainable fisheries management to take advantage of this opportunity.

JPI Oceans’ Knowledge Hub on Ocean Carbon Capacities has produced a first assessment of Europe’s ability to collect, maintain and use surface ocean CO₂ measurements.
The audit highlights that Europe’s leadership, particularly on modelling, is increasingly under threat due to a fragile observational base, uneven regional coverage, and the loss of the European SOCAT hub. Through an evaluation of defined metrics at global, European, regional, and country-specific levels, the audit offers recommendations to restore monitoring, secure data flows, and strengthen long-term stewardship for the generation of ocean carbon information.
