In March 2023, the THCS Partnership, co-funded by the European Commission (EC), launched its first Joint Transnational Call (JTC) for Research and Innovation (R&I) proposals under the theme "Healthcare of the Future." This ambitious initiative united 36 Funding Organisations, including Xjenza Malta (formerly the Malta Council for Science and Technology), from 24 countries to support the highest-ranking collaborative transnational research projects.
Xjenza Malta, through its Internationalisation Unit, has been actively involved since the inception of the Partnership, particularly in Work Package 8 (WP8), which is responsible for monitoring and assessing the results and impact of THCS projects. As the leader of the "Impact Assessment of the Joint Transnational Calls" task, Xjenza Malta conducts statistical analyses on the performance of each JTC. For the first JTC in 2023, Xjenza Malta coordinated and produced a…
New report shows lights and shadows of the innovation output performance of the EU and its Member States.
The European Union outperforms New Zealand, Australia, and China in terms of innovation output, but still lags behind countries like Switzerland, the United States, and South Korea. This is the latest finding published in a JRC report on the Innovation Output Indicator (IOI), a composite indicator that measures innovation performance for 46 countries including EU Member States, the EU bloc as a whole, and selected EFTA, OECD and emerging economies. The index feeds into the European Commission’s …
The European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS) aims to support the transformation of health and care systems with innovative solutions driven by knowledge and evidence. The general objective of THCS is to contribute to the transition towards more sustainable, efficient, resilient, inclusive, innovative, and high-quality people-centred health and care systems equally accessible to all people.
The THCS Transferability and Implementation Framework aims to support, promote, and speed up the transfer and implementation of evidence-informed solutions and practices across the health and care systems. The framework defines 1) the paradigmatic commitments on which the framework and its understanding of transferability and implementation are based, 2…
ProNiCare Makes First Contributions to SETAC Europe in Seville, Spain The Mar-TERA funded PRONICARE project reached an important milestone and successfully made its first contributions to the annual Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Europe Meeting from the 5th to the 9th of May in Seville, Spain.
Malta-based ProNiCare project partner AquaBioTech Group and Norway-based partner SINTEF collaborated on a poster titled “Development of green coating solutions for the problems of maritime corrosion and biofouling”, which was presented as part of a poster session at SETAC Europe 2024 dedicated to “Marine Ecotoxicology: Impacts and Problems of Maritime Corrosion and Biofouling”. The poster covered topics including maritime niche areas, coating development and real-world testing, microfouling assays, ecotoxicity testing, and reached an international audience of marine and ecotoxicology researchers.
The construction of ITER and the investment in the development of fusion energy technology means many business opportunities. F4E works together with European industry, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and research organisations to provide a wide range of high technology components, as well as engineering and support services for ITER. SMEs constitute an important element for the project and for developing innovative technologies. Getting SMEs on board and finding the best possible way to work together is our priority.
F4E has developed this survey to collect feedback on the participation of SMEs in F4E Calls for Tender. The objective is to listen to you, assess your experience working with F4E and to help us improve the support provided to SMEs during the procurement process and contract execution.
The Malta Council for Science and Technology, was awarded the “Best Practice in Good Governance Award” in recognition of the work done in accordance with the principles of good governance. The Auditor General found that MCST employees operated in accordance with the principles of good governance, demonstrating accountability and transparency in the administration of costs and charges, and in the manner in which all respective documents were kept. The CIHEAM launched the Youth Innovation Award in 2022 to reward innovative solutions, designed and implemented by young people, to accelerate green and blue transition processes towards more sustainable, inclusive and equitable food systems in the Mediterranean (SFS Med).
By using satellites currently in orbit, researchers managed to acquire an unprecedented view of the emissions and accumulation areas of marine litter. This opens up multiple possibilities to improve the fight against plastic pollution.
Marine littering has grown into a global environmental problem, and is recognised as an urgent priority on international sustainability agendas. A full 80% of this litter is plastic. Continued efforts in mapping its presence in water surfaces have produced important results, such as the discovery of the so-called plastic island in the middle of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Due to the vastness of the ocean, however, field measurements remain limited. This makes satellite-based observations one of the best hopes for large-scale monitoring of marine pollution.
“We believe in bringing together cities and their citizens, policymakers, arts and academia to jointly shape the transition to climate neutrality.”
CrAFt helps bring together cities and their citizens, policymakers, arts and academia to jointly shape the transition to climate neutrality. Work with us to test and share collaborative local governance models to harness the value of inclusiveness, aesthetics and sustainability towards climate neutral cities.

Two global data networks have agreed to a joint strategy and action plan that will deepen their collaboration, improve the flows and services of high-quality data about marine and coastal biodiversity, and support research and decision-making on the world’s oceans.
ASTROBEAT proposes for the first time the investigation of the cold-welding phenomenon for use in spacecraft hull repair following a hypervelocity impact by space debris. An experimental test rig will be tested and qualified, at TRL 6, on the International Space Station, thanks to an environment providing for an extended period of time micro-gravity conditions.
The project is led by Dr Leonardo Barilaro, Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Engineering a MCAST – The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology.
It has been shown that similar metallic materials can fuse or weld at ambient temperatures provided that there are sufficiently high contact forces. In the Space environment, this fusion is aided by the fact that the joint surfaces do not re-oxide after wear and, as a consequence, atomic diffusion of the metal occurs at lower contact forces. Cold-welding in the Space environment was…
